Faith Library Policies and Guidelines
Library Use Policies:
*Policies and guidelines are also in resources found in the Faith Library Bylaws.
*These rules/policies have been reviewed/approved/updated by the Faith Library Board - November 2016
The library is a privilege to have and use. We all must follow the guidelines and rules.
***Patron Numbers are only to be shared with patron or patron’s parent/guardian (under 18).
Children under age 18 or have not graduated high school as of current date:
- Can only check out 2 items at a time. (unless receive special permission i.e. need extra books for an assignment), or parental approval (parent is with them at the time of check out).
- 6th grade and up can check out of the orange section. Parent permission is needed for anyone younger or documented with permission by parent is updated and on hand.
- Students who attend Faith School district can check out movies after school is dismissed.
- No use of the wireless or adult computers, unless supervised by parent/guardian (in person).
- Students can use school computers by following school/library rules.
- Devices such as Nooks, iPods Ipads cannot be logged onto wireless unless prior approval by parent/guardian. This includes documentation – written note by parent, email, or phone call (message written down, who gave the permission and dated and placed in permission file). User must follow technology guidelines – as stated on Technology Use policy – school/public.
Everyone:
- Can use the computers but must follow user policies. Those who do not abide by guidelines and library rules will be banned from using library computers at library staff’s discretion.
- All patrons of the library will follow library rules. Disorderly conduct is prohibited and patron will be banned from library at library staff's discretion.
- An individual can submit a Book Complaint regarding a material found on the library shelf by filling out a Material Reconsideration Complaint. This complaint will be reviewed by the Library Supervisor and can be taken to the Library Board, if needed. The Complaint form will be filled out by patron and placed on file in the library. Complaint form may be copied one time and copied form given to patron (original stays).
- Laptops and devices that are brought to the library are not the library’s responsibility. User is to follow all library rules.
- Public Patrons are asked to take personal phone calls outside of the library as a courtesy. Students may use their phones during school time only for educational purposes with teacher approval as stated in Faith School District Handbooks.
- Use of library’s equipment and services may cost patrons a minimal amount. All printing requires the permission of library staff prior to printing.
- Please abide by all copyright rules as stated in Title 17 of the United States Code.
- Fines for late items are assessed and patrons are to pay late fines for continued use of the library. Library staff may contact the individual for overdue materials.
- Materials that are damaged are the responsibility of the patron who checked the material out. Replacement cost or donated item of equal value is accepted.
Adults over 18 and no longer a high school student (in addition to policies above):
- Can use the library for meetings and check out the meeting room key by reading and signing the meeting policy (all rules will apply).
- Can check out library equipment by signing Check out form. Equipment that comes back damaged is the responsibility of the individual who checked it out, and said individual will replace damaged equipment.
Donations or gifts received by library:
- All donations and gifts are welcome.
- Best use consideration given by Library Staff. If an item is already on the shelf or Library Supervisor sees fit, the item will be on the Give Away table
Faith Public Library Internet Use Agreements
Minor Internet/Computer Access Contract
I understand that when I am using the Internet or any other telecommunication device, I must adhere to all rules of courtesy, etiquette and laws regarding access and copying of information as prescribed by Federal, State or local law, US Link and the Faith Public Library.
These computers and internet access are connected to the Faith School District/South Dakota Department of Education State School Network. Each user will follow the Student Internet Access Agreement of the Faith School District for after school use at the library.
Technology is for use: 1) school work/ looking up library resources; 2) other.
Education is first, appropriate librarian approved games are allowed (state what you will be using the computer for). Printing is at no charge if school related otherwise, a fee of 15 cents per page (to be collected prior to printing).
Children under the age of 18, who have not graduated from high school, are only allowed to have access to computers which are on the school network connection.
If anyone violates the library computer usage, that individual may be banned may be up to a year, from using the library technology (subject to consequences as stated in Faith School District use policy). This agreement will be valid for one year from date signed and updated yearly at the beginning of school year.
If other people are waiting for the computer, allotted usage time is 60 minutes.
This agreement is valid for one year from the date signed. Updated yearly at the beginning of school year. Renewed annually.

Adult Internet/Computer Access Contract__
The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The Faith Library Staff will deem what is inappropriate use and their decision is final. The Faith Library may deny, revoke, or suspend specific user access at any time.
UNACCEPTABLE USE
Internet computers will not be used for illegal activity, to access illegal materials, or to access materials that, by local community standards would be obscene. Examples of unacceptable use include, but not limited to:
As a user, I understand that when I am using the Internet or any other telecommunication device, I must adhere to all rules of courtesy, etiquette and laws regarding access and copying of information as prescribed by Federal, State or local law, US Link and the Faith Public Library.
Public computers are only accessible to public patrons who are high school graduates or older.

Faith Public/School Library Selection Policy
All materials/resources are based on selection criteria by library supervisor and Faith Public Library Board:
1. Need
2. Use - long term, age appropriate
3. Current - newest info
4. Reliability
5. Price - affordability, maintenance
Circulation - use of online card catalog, how materials are circulated with checkouts. Materials are inventoried on an annual basis.
Collection development - circulation with materials inventoried on an annual basis. If material is weeded, is based on use, current, condition.
Discarding-Retention-Replacement
Collection Maintenance-to maintain a useful and attractive collection, materials may be repaired or rebound, removed from the Library when they become badly worn, damaged, out-of-date, over duplicated or unused.
Criteria for Selection:
In selecting of materials and electronic resources - the library supervisor is guided by the Faith Library Board trustees, Faith School District, South Dakota State Library, American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and the principles outlined in the Freedom to Read and Freedom to View statements of the American Library Association.
All selections will meet many of the following criteria for selection:
- needs and interest of the library's users
- value of the material for information, recreation or education
- contemporary significance or permanent value
- accuracy
- authority of author
- relation of work to existing collection and balance of viewpoints expressed in the collection
- price, format and ease of use
- availability of material elsewhere (can be ILL inter-library loaned)
- popular demand
- artistic excellence
- recommended/request by school staff to use for educational purposes on a long term basis
- vitality and originality of thought
- deemed necessary by library supervisor and/or library board
Patron Recommendations:
Requests for specific titles or subjects are held to the same principles which govern other purchased materials. Every attempt will be made to accommodate patron wishes. Final responsibility lies with library supervisor. Interlibrary loaning can be used.
The Library Supervisor attempts to meet the needs of the total community, recognizing that some materials may be viewed as controversial by individual citizens. Patrons can fill out a Reconsideration of Materials form (see library staff onsite). It is the responsibility of the individual library user to select those materials which suit patron needs. Supervising the use of library materials for a minor is the responsibility of the parent or guardian/teacher (during school time), not the library staff. Minors can check out age appropriate materials (see Library Use Policies and Guidelines).
Handling of gifts - All gifts are welcome. Library supervisor will see if it fits into collection. If a copy is already maintained, item will be on "Give away" in west entrance.
Electronic resources/Ebooks are provided through SD Titles to Go and the South Dakota State Library Databases found on the library.sd.gov site and for use to all patrons. Other electronic resource purchases will be based on selection criteria.
